We’d invited several record company execs to come as we are hoping the soundtrack will make a lovely album for release alongside the film.

So there we were in our Bafta-best ready to chat them up when it dawned on us that we didn’t actually know what several of them looked like. (We tend to deal with A&R, not marketing people.) Rather than accosting strangers all night, we resorted to sending out emails this morning to those we didn’t meet and so far we’ve had some very favourable responses. To be honest, it would be a poor do if a soundtrack of Mozart’s masterpieces didn’t get a thumbs up from record companies but in this day and age, nothing surprises me!

Although I had to watch the actress I was dubbing very carefully when I recorded her singing voice, it was still very strange hearing my own voice come out of someone else’s mouth in the middle of a film, especially someone so wonderfully buxom and blonde. James was less perturbed by it and said he could happily get used to it….

It’s bad enough when I have to do it for the babies, but I’d always presumed I would grow out of the traditional 3am essay crisis (accompanied by copious cups of coffee with toast and marmite) but my Cambridge days are a good 15 years back and its not happened yet. Rather like the feeding of twins 3 hourly 24/7, there is something very intimate about sharing those middle of the night work panics with someone;

“Shall I put more coffee on?”

“You ready for more toast yet?”

I imagine it would be very lonely on your own, although I guess you would get a lot more done without the endless coffee/toast breaks.

The sessions are being held at Angel studios; there are hardly any studios that work to picture and accommodate an orchestra left in London. Try booking a crack team of players and then telling them they have to go out to Pinewood! There were a couple of tense moments when the director and producer had differing opinions but Steve, the engineer assured us that they were all pussy cats compared to how it normally is. We were supposed to be mixing yesterday but it took ages just to load all the files from the sessions, as although Angel (like most studios) works in Pro Tools, we are mixing in something called Piramix.

The question as to why we are doing this arose more than once yesterday during the many hours it took to upload all the files, but it seemed like a great idea at the time. We’ve hired the mobile recording truck from Floating Earth and it’s literally parked outside our house, we’ve run a cable into our studio and put a baby monitor in the van so we can even work while the boys are sleeping. So far the neighbours have been very understanding although I have already received a text from one friend asking if they could come and have a go in our Floating Earth Van. I had to explain that it isn’t some virtual funfair ride, but the name of the company who own the mobile mixing unit.

Well, Julian Ovenden’s recording session for Bet on Love went well. We thought we would need 2 days to dub all of his music but as he was dubbing himself, he rather unsurprisingly found it pretty straightforward to match his singing with his own mouth movements! We just have the soprano Sally Matthews left to record for the film this weekend. I was at college with Sally years ago and she was an outstanding opera singer even then. She is currently singing the role of Fiordiligi at Covent Garden to rave reviews so it should be a fun weekend of work and catching up.

I have to take Arthur into Kings for further hearing assessments this week and couldn’t resist posting this photo of him following in his parents footsteps – just listening to an edit perhaps?

Bet on Love.

I have to say, it’s not as easy as it looks. I feel a little sheepish as I’ve been recording the singers who are dubbing some of the other actors and I made Peter Savage, the lovely bass baritone, sing one phrase about 30 times to get it exact. Having said that, he is the singing voice of Richard E Grant in the film,and Richard is not a natural singer by a long stretch of the imagination. He had to deliberately sing slightly out of time to make it fit.

It is really weird to see a blonde 20 something actress with my singing voice coming out of her mouth. The Editor assured me that it’s believable and it’s just particularly odd for me to see someone with my voice…

The film will be released later on this year and features lots of lovely Mozart (and rather alot of shagging too). Something for everyone then!
