The Rossini is one of the best 2nd rate oratorios and I mean that in a really positive way. It’s so dramatic it’s practically a mini opera. I think half the reason there was such a lovely feel to the evening was that father and daughter were the tenor and soprano soloists; Bonaventura Bottone and his daughter Rebecca. He must be 60 now but has the freshness of a voice 20 years younger and a top D flat to boot (for those of you who don’t necessarily know what that sounds like, it is a whole tone above the highest note in Nessun Dorma!). You got the feeling he could have gone higher too. His daughter has clearly inherited his singing talent.

Anyway, it was not the ideal conditions to be singing a concert as I’d been in Lewisham A&E with J on the Thursday and then Kings on the Friday. They kept him in Friday night and threatened to operate on a suspected hernia at about 1 in the morning but luckily the radiographer stepped in and they pumped him full of antibiotics instead. Anyway, by Saturday lunchtime he was stable so I went off to Bedford half asleep leaving a set of wonderful grandparents holding the fort.

Off to Sheffield this weekend to sing Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis but as yet no hospital dramas to contend with. How boring and yet how blissful.

I’m sitting backstage at Bedford Corn Exchange, having just sung my first 2 songs in tonight’s concert on the Viennese Spectacular tour. It’s snowing outside and I’ve just had the worst, most overcooked piece of fish ever and paid £13.95 for the privilege. I should have sent it back but I only had an hour between the rehearsal and concert so there really was not time for them to cook another piece – anyway I’m far to British when it comes to doing that. I’ll complain to everyone about it but really I’m all mouth and no trousers. Not a bad description of a classical singer actually…

Still, I do have several reasons to be happy despite the treacherous drive home in the snow.

So my top 3 reasons to be happy despite a rubbish dinner? As follows:

I’m going to see my babies tomorrow

I had a full nights sleep last night whilst apparently at home Seth woke James up at 3:30 and wouldn’t go back to sleep.

This is the last night of the Viennese tour so tomorrow I get to sleep in my own bed.

Just heard applause so that’s the interval – just nipping out to meet some forum members from my website who are in the audience.

2nd half about to begin and I have something else to add to my list.

4. Three of the forum members have just given me a beautiful orchid. I feel spoilt.

It’s hard to believe that tomorrow I will be back to my jeans and sick splattered sweatshirts…
