I’m sitting in a café before the concert tonight frantically learning words as I’ve just found out I’m not singing one of the arias I’d prepared, but another one. To be fair there are 2 arias nicknamed the Tipsy Song, one by Offenbach and one by Strauss. I considered trying to fit the Offenbach melody over the Strauss orchestral accompaniment but decided it might be too dissonant for the people of Colchester.

We’ve recently been recording with the people in the photo. I went to college with Paul, a very talented operatic bass you might have seen at one of our opera houses and although you won’t necessarily have heard of his partner, Ross Anthony, he is one of the most famous personalities in Germany. He won the German Popstar competition, sold over 2 million records, won their version of I’m a Celebrity (he got the task eating live insects). He also happens to be one of the most unstarry stars I’ve ever met.

So, onto another star who was refreshingly normal and at the risk of name dropping which I am quite unashamedly doing, we were recording Robert Plant yesterday. I would love to pretend to be cool about it but I don’t get to do things like that very often, I’m not alone in my inability to act cool infront of a big name. James remembers the night Madonna came to ENO to watch Carmen and in the opening scene when the chorus are supposed to kick a football back and forth on stage, they ended up all facing the same way, towards her box, which clearly made acting a game of football rather difficult, or certainly very one-sided.
