The Next Generation

So, I have finally worked with someone my 10 yr old niece thinks is cool. It goes without saying that as a woman accelerating towards the end of her 30s, I wouldn’t be able to recognise this man (well boy really) if I bumped into him in the street. Except, you would never bump into him in the street. Firstly he is far too famous to walk anywhere, a car picked him up from his hotel 3 minutes away, actually, if his fans are all like my niece that was probably a wise move. Secondly, his minder was an overwhelmingly large man (definitely man this time) who would be extremely unlikely to allow anyone within 10 yards of his charge. Trust me, you wouldn’t argue with him on this point. I felt his beady eye on me throughout the recording session from his position on the sofa (it was a 2-seater but unsurprisingly, he sat alone).

Nick Jonas is still a teenager, but unassuming, softly spoken and polite which I found very strange as not only am I not used to teenagers behaving like that, it’s not behaviour you can count on with famous artists either:  a pleasant surprise on both counts. I’m not sure I’d recognise him if I saw him again, but then I can guarantee he would say the same about me and James! However, he very kindly signed his music at the end of the session. I’ve put it in the post to my niece. More »

Divine intervention in Bath

4 Commentsby Juliette  |  June 27th, 2011  |  Latest News, Performances

It is simply impossible to park in Bath on a Saturday. My rehearsal for the Mozart Requiem was at 2pm in Bath Abbey, and I was running late as usual. Why does the last little bit, once you are off the M4, take double the time of the rest of the journey? I do realise a much reduced speed limit might play a part.  So, even though I managed for once in my life to navigate successfully the one-way system of a city I don’t live in, I then couldn’t find a car park vaguely near the Abbey with spaces in it. Eventually I found a space on the dot of 2pm.

Belton House

As the parents of 2 year olds, we are very used to sleepless nights, it’s to be expected, goes with the territory etc etc. But we had to stay up all night last week for a different reason. Our studio basement flooded with the torrential rain and we had a full on fight to keep the water out. We won, the carpet is saved (hallelujah), but spare a thought for the client we had booked in at 9am the next morning. Dehumidifiers on and our eyes propped open with matchsticks. More »

Slug war

Much excitement in the house as we have several green strawberries and even a teeny, tiny tomato on one of our plants. The slugs got all three of the cucumber plants, but I have become like a woman possessed with the salt every evening. They are not going to get past me this year.  I am determined that we shall have a strawberry that goes through all the various shades and reaches a proper crimson without great holes missing from it.

We’ve been in discussions these last few weeks to produce another album. Not anyone from our usual classical world I might add. Trouble is, these big names from the world of pop and rock, expect certain perks, and normally get them. The particular artist in question happily admits to not being able to write, or arrange but still wants 50% of our royalties. More »

1-Take Wonder

6 Commentsby Juliette  |  May 20th, 2011  |  Latest News, Record Producing, Twin news

We missed the Classical Brits last week as I had a family funeral that day but do watch next week when it’s on telly as we arranged the John Barry medley at the end of the show.

This week’s been busy so far. James is in Denmark working so I recorded Michael Ball on my own on Monday. What a lovely, talented man. He is also a 1-take wonder. In and out the studio within the hour, leaving me with a first-rate vocal.

It also turned out to be the week that Arthur had 3 different hospital More »

Greetings from Colchester

Greetings from The Mercury Theatre in Colchester. I’m sitting in a café before the concert tonight frantically learning words as I’ve just found out I’m not singing one of the arias I’d prepared, but another one. To be fair there are 2 arias nicknamed the Tipsy Song, one by Offenbach and one by Strauss. I considered trying to fit the Offenbach melody over the Strauss orchestral accompaniment but decided it might be too dissonant for the people of Colchester.

We’ve recently been recording with the people in the photo. I went to college with Paul,  a very talented operatic bass you More »

Singing, producing and birthday cake

29 Commentsby Juliette  |  May 3rd, 2011  |  Domestic Diva, Latest News, Record Producing, Twin news

I’m in terrible voice at the moment. I’ve simply not had time to do enough regular singing with all the record producing and it’s not been helped by rather a lot of sleepless nights (twin toddlers for you).  I have a concert in Colchester next week so I’ve really got to knuckle down this week and get it all working as sadly, there are no short cuts.

We got back from recording sessions in Prague at the weekend. In time for the boys 2nd birthday and the  making of the ridiculously over ambitious train cake. When will I learn?  They were recently discharged from physio More »

Humpty Dumpty’s for sopranos only

1 Commentby Juliette  |  April 25th, 2011  |  Latest News, Record Producing

Here’s a photo of us in the studio in Copenhagen last month and it’s off to Prague on Wednesday for more recording so no doubt I’ll pass many tourists entering the country for the royal wedding as I leave.

Many thanks for Seesaw Marjory Daw feedback. More »
