First Night premiere

First Night had it’s ‘first night’ this week at Canary Wharf. It was very strange finally seeing it in a big cinema and even stranger hearing my voice coming out of someone else’s mouth (I’m the operatic voice of one of the actresses). The party after was at Boisdale’s and consisted of champagne, brandy, and oysters with brilliant live music from Reuben Richards & Soul Train. Fantastically la di da and lots of fun people watching to be had although these kid of events always leave James and I with an overwhelming desire to get chips on the way home and we looked ridiculously over dressed in our local chippy.

Sarah Brightman, who stars in the film looks so ridiculously young in the flesh she simply has to have had some help although she is also naturally teeny tiny and that is natural (she told James she simply doesn’t eat). I think she used to be a dancer which must help. More »

Seesaw Marjory Daw

Arthur studying a Brian Ferneyhough score

James and I are having an ongoing argument. What could it be about? Money, career, children perhaps?

No, none of the above, something far more serious.

He insists on singing Seesaw Marjory Daw to the wrong tune. Now that may not sound like such a terrible crime to a non-musician but I can assure you that no son of mine is going to get the tune to a nursery rhyme wrong. If James persists, not only could this become a reality, but he is also putting our sons in a very difficult position.  Obviously I’m looking to the future once they can actually sing, or even talk, but the time will come when they will have to make a choice. To choose between their divided parents. Will they side with James and sing his version or will they work out who bakes the cakes and choose mine? For those of you with an opinion (and I realise I may not be addressing anyone from this point on) it’s the 2nd line, Johnny shall have a new master that is causing the main disagreement.

Just hum it through. Notice the 1st line of Seesaw M D is basically 2 notes, a third apart. But of course, I hear you answer, More »

Film Premiere

5 Commentsby Juliette  |  04.12.11  |  "First Night", Latest News

We finally have a release date for the film First Night. September 9th. It’s very exciting for us as we’ve never been to a film premiere. I’m already stressing about a dress. We’ll have just been to Italy on holiday for 2 weeks so I’m sure to have pizza belly. It’s a common condition affecting tourists and locals alike, normally brought on by excessive greed. Sadly there’s no vaccine (save abstinence) and sufferers encounter numerous symptoms ranging from  indigestion, bloating, distended abdomen. The distended abdomen is causing me the real stress about wearing a flattering dress on the red carpet.

Even if I was to go the abstinence route and avoid the pizza, there’s the ice cream, pasta, wine… I could go on. More »

Eric Whitacre is gorgeous

This is Taverner not Whitacre

What a weekend. I’m exhausted. It wasn’t singing Taverner on Friday and Saturday night that did me in. Oh no, that was the easy bit. It was the driving the kids up and down from sussex to London to their various activities and grandparents between rehearsals and concerts that was stressful. Still, I wasn’t late for anything, the kids all had a great weekend and I’ve even managed to make an orphan costume for an Annie production as well. Admittedly, that only involved some scissors, boiling water and a teabag…

Taverner is very moving and spiritual to listen to, but the performer has a tough job which tends to involve singing the same, or very similar music, very slowly over and over again for half an hour. Mind you, Taverner was no fool. Economy of means ensures that he got paid very well per note! The Brighton Festival Chorus were on wonderful form, some first-rate singing of wonderful English and American choral music. For those of you who have yet to hear of the increasingly famous American composer, Eric More »

Classic FM and Craig Ogden

5 Commentsby Juliette  |  01.27.11  |  "First Night", Latest News, Record Producing

We are off into Classic FM tomorrow to discuss working on guitarist Craig Ogden’s new album amongst other things. His last album for Classic FM did really well, and well worth a listen if you haven’t heard it yet. Not only is he a great bloke,  but I also duetted with him on my Venezia album, so it would be lovely to work with him again. More »

Bafta Screening

3 Commentsby Juliette  |  10.27.10  |  "First Night", Latest News

James and I attended the screening of the Cosi film last night at Bafta. We’d invited several record company execs to come as we are hoping the soundtrack will make a lovely album for release alongside the film.

So there we were in our Bafta-best ready to chat them up when it dawned on us that we didn’t actually know what several of them looked like. (We tend to deal with A&R, not marketing people.) Rather than accosting strangers all night, we resorted to sending out emails this morning to those we didn’t meet and so far we’ve had some very favourable responses. To be honest, it would be a poor do if a soundtrack of Mozart’s masterpieces didn’t get a thumbs up from record companies but in this day and age, nothing surprises me! More »

Pusan Film Festival

11 Commentsby Juliette  |  10.19.10  |  "First Night", Latest News

Well, I’m pleased to say that First Night did get into a film festival; Pusan Film Festival.

“Sorry, what was that,”

I said, the Pusan Film Festival. I would love to tell you where that is but I’ve really no idea. Apparently it’s the biggest film festival in SE Asia but that’s no good to me with 18 month old twins. I might have been able to chat up the grandparents for an overnight in Venice but Seoul is a whole different matter.  So there goes my new frock.

A reminder of what might have been!

But, the film will be screened at Bafta next week to an invited audience which is very exciting for us as More »

First Night and Last Night of the Proms

4 Commentsby Juliette  |  07.06.10  |  "First Night", Latest News, Performances, Twin news

Still waiting to see if Sizzle is going to make it into the Venice Film Festival  – we should hear next week.  To confuse matters, it isn’t Sizzle anymore. They’ve changed it to First Night – quelle surprise (or should I say quelle amélioration!)

Some good news is Proms in the Park has enquired about my availability for the Last Night of the Proms in Salford again which I feel really pleased about as I’d presumed they wouldn’t want the same soloist 3 years in a row. Fingers crossed they make a definite booking. More »
