For anyone who is still under the misapprehension that the life of a singer is in any way glamourous, read on. Sunday, the day of my RPO/ Brighton Festival Chorus gig, started early with a message from my childminder saying she was really poorly and in bed. So, I rang my very own fairy godmother (Mum) and asked if she would mind having the kids for the day. Short notice I grant but it was that or sing with a baby on each hip. Not the accessories I had in mind to go with my red satin gown.
I had to get to Mum’s from London, about 2 hours normally but going at 30 miles an hour along the treacherous, snow covered M25, it took considerably longer. More »

Brighton Dome
For those of you who used to read my diary on the website, you may remember that James and I did an arrangement of O Holy Night for a concert he conducted in Denmark last year. It was a duet featuring Michael Bolton and Katherine Jenkins. Not the most likely of combinations but it turns out that both have an album out at the moment and both have included our arrangement on their CD so can’t complain. More »

Couldn't get a picture of a nightingale
I thoroughly enjoyed myself at Symphony Hall, Birmingham last Friday. The CBSO really are an amazing orchestra and it was such a treat to perform with them for only my 2nd time. Stephen Bell, the conductor, found the original arrangement of A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square by Robert Farnon which Sinatra used and recorded. It’s an absolute gem and was rather like having a masterclass in orchestration for me. It was also lovely to have David (of forum and blog fame) and his family in the audience cheering me on but I was rather disappointed that they shut the bars in the Hall after the concert so we couldn’t have a drink.
I have some very exciting news I can only hint at for the moment. James and I are working round the More »

Found this shop last month in Bruges and spent a small fortune in it!
Glad to report that The Holly and the Ivy is all finished with many thanks to Robbo for his suggestions. We actually included 2 verses in 5/4 – sounds a bit like Take Five but clearly without the cool tune! Okay, it’s not a work of art, but it works. More »

For those of you that didn’t manage to see Proms in the Park from Salford, it was the best atmosphere at a Prom concert I have ever experienced despite the fact that it rained until 5pm on the day. It really was such fun. My friend Jon Christos did a superb job presenting and I don’t know how he coped with people talking in his ear constantly trying to get the live link up to the Albert Hall on time. Madness. Personally I couldn’t relax until I’d sung the rather tricky una voce poco fa, but luckily that was the second item in the programme so I got it out the way early on.
What can I say about the very friendly and easy going John Barrowman. Not only was he lovely, More »

Proms in the Park last year
I spent yesterday up in Manchester with the BBC Phil rehearsing for Saturday’s Proms in the Park. The sing-a-long medley this year is The Sound of Music. We always used to watch this film as a family at Christmas when I was little so I’m thoroughly looking forward to belting out all the songs and amazingly I still remember most of the words. Goes to show what you learn when you are very young stays with you.
We have sadly lost out on producing a new album for a well-known tenor who despite the record company wanting to employ us, didn’t want us to produce his album, although he has never worked with us before or even met James. Ho hum, I guess you can’t take these things personally and it might well be the old adage of the male artist who has a problem with a female producer… Whatever, we don’t More »

BBC Proms in the Park 2009, Salford
We have a bright red double buggy that sits permanently on the pathway up to our front door. It can just about go through the door at a push, but takes the paint off the hallway and obviously once you’ve pushed it in, you are literally caught between the buggy and a hard place, so we have taken to parking it outside the front door on fine days but using a bike lock to attach it to our fence. Well, we do live a stones throw from Deptford!
I woke up this morning to discover the buggy hadn’t been nicked. Oh no, just the bicycle lock. The thief clearly doesn’t have twins so kindly left the buggy behind. Does that mean I should buy a padlock to lock the bicycle lock more securely to the fence before attaching the buggy to the bicycle lock. Ridiculous.
I’ve uploaded a couple more live dates on the website and I’m glad to say the Proms in the Park is confirmed More »

Me relaxing in luxury at Kilworth???
Greetings from Kilworth House. Had a great concert last night (was lovely to see David and his wife in the audience cheering me on) and after a lovely whole nights sleep in hotel luxury, I’m about to warm up for concert no.2 tonight. I feel a little guilty as when I spoke to James at about 9am this morning he said he’d been up for hours and twice in the night for the boys but it was his turn to work last weekend…
He told me he had a very strange dream where his Dad was getting really cross about the twins wrecking their house and breaking everything in it (we are visiting them next weekend and the house is for sale) so James jumped to the boys defence and pointed out that the pigs running around the kitchen were far more likely to blame. (James’ Dad keeps a couple of pigs in the garden – the plot thickens.) Then he was woken up by Arthur screaming so we don’t know More »
