La Bella Italia

I love Italy. Strangely, it always compares favourably to the area of London we live in, we are in the bit between Lewisham and Deptford. Now check out the photo of Lake Fiastra – I’m the dot in the water…

What we hadn’t anticipated was the attention gemelli (twins) attract in a country like Italy. James was buying Anna an ice cream in the local bar when a lady came running in shouting “Guarda, guarda i gemelli inglesi”. We couldn’t walk down the roadwithout a local peering into the buggy and invariably waking up one of the boys by fiddling with their toes or some such.  So our fame in the lovely village of loro piceno rapidly spread, coupled with the fact that the owner of our lovely agriturismo in Le Marche happened to google my name. By the end of the week he had invited most of his family and friends to a barbecue where he very kindly cooked us a totally fantastic Florentine steak but then asked if I’d sing for my supper. (I sang Carmen as no way was I attempting any Italian rep in front of a load of Italians!)

My poor veg were in a sorry state on our return. All the rocket has bolted and the artichoke (my first attempt at one of my favourite veggies) has gone brown. For some reason the yellow courgettes, my pride and joy, are all rotting at one end. Still, the tomatoes are finally ripe and I’ve got a great tan.

welcome back!!…..sounds like fun. How will James be able to prepare all those fancy recipes of his without home grown veg ! :) . If it is any consolation, our veg patch is a disaster this year also :(
Looking forward to album/ film/ concert news in due course …. Dx

Glad to hear you had a good holiday, and managed to return to UK without the twins being kidnapped by the local villagers! Fancy having to sing for your supper whilst on holiday! I don’t blame you for steering clear of Italian arias, but I’m sure you gave a brilliant Carmen performance.

Hope the veg perk up a bit for you….the other D!

    Hi Juliette,
glad you had a good break in Italy, but what a dilemma. Either stay at home and lovingly tend all the garden produce or go away.
Maybe next year you could run a competition on here to get a lucky member to water your produce and keep any weeds at bay in return for keeping your address a closely garded secret. Those yellow courgettes I grow as well, but have a holiday away and they grow up into marrows before you get home.
Come forward all you amateur gardeners.
    David.

Great to hear you had a lovely time Juliette.
The best thing you can do with fruit and many veg varieties is soak them in a few pints of alcohol for a couple of months. At the mo I have Black Cherry Brandy and Red Cherry Brandy plus Damson Gin and Blackberry Brandy on the go.
Thanks to Mr Cowlishaw for the Damsons and Blackberries, you will reap what you sow my friend and thanks to Ma Nature for the cherries and also for the elderberries, sloes and crab apples yet to come. (hic!):)
