24 hours kid free…

9 Commentsby Juliette  |  June 8th, 2010  |  Domestic Diva, Latest News

It was half term last week and my Mum offered to have the kids overnight. I was going to ask her whether she was insane when something told me I should say nothing but embrace the opportunity. Offers like this one don’t come round very often when you have 1 year old twins and an 8 year old who can out-chat Oprah.

But the pressure of making sure we enjoyed the 24 hours of freedom to the maximum was immense. The food had to be perfect, the hotel good,  a bit of culture to visit and most important of all, the sleep had to be guaranteed. Not for us a hen/stag party going on in the bar downstairs.

So, after much deliberation we went for:

  • Eurostar to Paris – tick
  • Lovely quiet hotel in walking distance of everything – tick
  • Sacre Coeur, Eiffel Tower and 1 gallery – tick, tick, tick
  • Cotes de Boeuf for 2 (on the bone of course and dripping blood) – massive tick
  • Bed by 10pm after long baths – tick
  • Hideous food poisoning on the Eurostar train all the way back – black mark.

points 1 to 5 sounded wonderful number 6 not so….. but I`m sure it was all wonderful up till that moment, and child free what bliss! Point is Juliette my two are late 20`s can still outchat Oprah(of course they haven`t got that from me….)and still the phone rings and you just know by the tone of the “Muuummm” they want something usually money, one bonus is they don`t live here anymore wel apart from the few pop backs for the odd few months here and there, but I`m sure I wouldn`t have it any other way as I`m quite certain you wouldn`t Juliette.Hope the boys, and your daughter are all well

I love Paris in the springtime!! :) (how about recording that lovely song…or a medley of Charles Trenet?) ….how lovely…I could live in Paris if it were not for the raw meat they serve! (YUK!)Steak tartare…not flipping likely.
Glad you had a lovely time apart from the over utilisation of the infamous Eurostar Loo!

I have the perfect get away for you Juliette.
The open road at a leisurely pace and not a car in sight*. Views to die for in Englands green and pleasant land. *Fine dining and a different menu every evening, al fresco should the weather permit. *No street lights disturbing your sleep and there’s nothing better than being woken to the sound of bird song, a babbling brook or/and the smell of clean fresh air.

I forgot to say, you will need a towing vehicle (a 4×4 is ideal) and a caravan.
    * The cars are all behind you with their drivers gnashing their teeth. (So what? You can’t see them :) )
    * Fine dining courtesy of one of the many country hostelries.
    * parked up in a feild or on the edge of a forest…or even in one (Thetford Forest Caravan Club Site)

Plus… Country living like this ensures unconcious children at the end of the day. What more could you ask for?

    xxxxxxx

What a shame your idyllic trip was spoiled at the end! At least you got to enjoy the break away, from all this and the children. (bet you couldn’t wait to get back to them though!!!) Believe me, grandchildren are the best, you can take all the good bits, and give them back when things go pear-shaped!

    Hi Lee,
Thought you’d like to know my lovely orchid is flowering for a 2nd time. Friends of mine have just come back from camping in Thetford and had a lovely time.

    Hi Danny,
Exactly. I think Anna had as good a time at Mums as we did in Paris!

    Hi Juliette,
what you described in Paris exactly mirrors my experience a few years ago.If you get the chance again add a ‘bateau mouche’ along the Seine in the late evening; they have flood lights on the boat lighting up the buildings; such a relaxing and romantic experience. Sacre Coeur is quite a climb but what a view when you get there!!
I have just learned that you were instrumental in getting the latest ‘King’s Singers’ CD off the presses. It sounds great and well done!I am very glad the orchid survived the very cold weather in its journey from Bedford.
    David.
