Recording the soundtrack
It was the first orchestral session for the film on Tuesday and after a very long Monday night I’ve decided I’m getting too old to stay up meeting deadlines. It’s bad enough when I have to do it for the babies, but I’d always presumed I would grow out of the traditional 3am essay crisis (accompanied by copious cups of coffee with toast and marmite) but my Cambridge days are a good 15 years back and its not happened yet. Rather like the feeding of twins 3 hourly 24/7, there is something very intimate about sharing those middle of the night work panics with someone;
“Shall I put more coffee on?”
“You ready for more toast yet?”
I imagine it would be very lonely on your own, although I guess you would get a lot more done without the endless coffee/toast breaks.
The sessions are being held at Angel studios; there are hardly any studios that work to picture and accommodate an orchestra left in London. Try booking a crack team of players and then telling them they have to go out to Pinewood! There were a couple of tense moments when the director and producer had differing opinions but Steve, the engineer assured us that they were all pussy cats compared to how it normally is. We were supposed to be mixing yesterday but it took ages just to load all the files from the sessions, as although Angel (like most studios) works in Pro Tools, we are mixing in something called Piramix.
The question as to why we are doing this arose more than once yesterday during the many hours it took to upload all the files, but it seemed like a great idea at the time. We’ve hired the mobile recording truck from Floating Earth and it’s literally parked outside our house, we’ve run a cable into our studio and put a baby monitor in the van so we can even work while the boys are sleeping. So far the neighbours have been very understanding although I have already received a text from one friend asking if they could come and have a go in our Floating Earth Van. I had to explain that it isn’t some virtual funfair ride, but the name of the company who own the mobile mixing unit.
