Rossini Stabat Mater

The concert in Bedford Corn Exchange on Saturday had a lovely atmosphere. The Rossini is one of the best 2nd rate oratorios and I mean that in a really positive way. It’s so dramatic it’s practically a mini opera. I think half the reason there was such a lovely feel to the evening was that father and daughter were the tenor and soprano soloists; Bonaventura Bottone and his daughter Rebecca. He must be 60 now but has the freshness of a voice 20 years younger and a top D flat to boot (for those of you who don’t necessarily know what that sounds like, it is a whole More »

Gracie Fields

Just heard the producer has got the money in to do the orchestral sessions for the film. Of course they now want the music recorded tomorrow but it takes time to book studios, a symphony orchestra etc etc. We’ll do our very best. We’ve got Alfie Boe in the studio on Thursday to see whether the big wigs prefer his vocal to Julian’s.

James and I also clean forgot about the track we did on the new Gracie Field’s album with Jane Horrocks. Apparently it entered the album charts at 31 a couple of More »

David Bowie’s Starman

We recorded a demo yesterday for Decca. Their idea is a black boy band singing Bowie’s Starman with a Motown/Outkast vibe. Okay, I guess it doesn’t read so well as a concept but I can assure you it sounds a lot better than you might think. It made me feel very old though as none of the boys had ever heard the song before!!! I also couldn’t help wondering whether one of the guys knew that his trousers had fallen down so much they were practically underneath his bottom. I mean, I could see ALL of his boxer shorts. I don’t care how much James insists it’s trendy, you surely don’t want people you’ve just met to see your underwear.

Back into Kings with the boys this afternoon for more tests which is a good thing as my list of More »

Bet on love or Sizzle

I’m glad to report that Thursday went well with all the big wigs from the film. We didn’t get all the music we’d worked on approved but the vast majority was passed so it’s been well worth all the hard work.

They’ve decided now they have heard all the ‘real’ opera voices dubbed over the actors, that they might want to dub Julian Ovenden as well. He did a great job and is a very good singer but he might not sound like an opera singer next to Sally Matthews in the duet from Cosi.

I’m very impressed he was so convincing. We’ve asked our old friend, Alfie Boe, to have a go at being his voice which we hope will be a good match if they do feel all the actors should be dubbed. He is in rehearsal at ENO at the moment so hopefully he will be More »

More dubbing and deafness

We’ve just recorded the fabulous soprano Sally Matthews, who is dubbing Mia Maestro and the role of Fiordiligi in the film. I was at college with Sally (rather a lot of years ago!) and she has just finished a run of Cosi at Covent Garden to rave reviews so it was a real treat to spend the day recording her singing and catching up on gossip. She has a 1 year old so we had lots to chat about.
We have the editor, producer and director turning up on Thursday to listen to all the music and pass judgement. More »
