Duet with Meatloaf (continued)

5 Commentsby Juliette  |  02.18.10  |  Latest News, Performances, Popstar to Opera star

Greetings from Egypt where we are having a last minute half term break. For those of you left in snowy UK you probably don’t want to hear that James has burnt his ears as usual, I’ve read the first 3 pages of my novel about 4 times and Anna has so far managed to eat 4 ice creams and have chips every day. It’s not all fun though as we accidentally left the boys bedtime cuddly toys in the car in the rather stressful frenzy that was getting to the airport on time, and they haven’t slept in their cots as a result – it took over 3 hours to get them off to sleep last night without them!

Back to the subject in hand. I still hadn’t memorised all of the words when the car came to take me to the studio and was feeling absolutely exhausted, as for some reason known only to Seth, he decided to stay awake for a large portion of the night and felt very strongly that I should join him in his nocturnal activities. Duet with Meatloaf

9 Commentsby Juliette  |  02.13.10  |  Latest News, Popstar to Opera star

Might be a long blog so I’ll do a 2-parter and finish off later. I’m delighted with so many different viewpoints and comments being about this show- makes for interesting reading.

So I got the call on Thursday saying Meatloaf wants to duet with an opera singer. Mad idea but a great way of raising my profile quite apart from the fact that I remember Meatloaf dominating the charts when I was a kid. He is a legend and what a thing to be able to say:

“I sang Bat out of Hell as a duet with Meatloaf”

They wanted to send a car straightaway but first I had to take both the boys to Kings for their regular bloods which can’t be missed as their levels have to be closely monitored. (As it happened we just got the results and Arthur’s medication has had to be increased so it was absolutely the right call not to delay them).

As soon as I got back from the hospital they whisked me to the studios for a rehearsal with Meatloaf. I met the musical director and asked for some music but he only had a lyric sheet for me. So this is Rock’n Roll – no music! I’m afraid us classically trained singers need dots to read so I was slightly More »

More dubbing of opera singers

7 Commentsby Juliette  |  02.08.10  |  "First Night", Latest News

Well, Julian Ovenden’s recording session for Bet on Love went well. We thought we would need 2 days to dub all of his music but as he was dubbing himself, he rather unsurprisingly found it pretty straightforward to match his singing with his own mouth movements! We just have the soprano Sally Matthews left to record for the film this weekend. I was at college with Sally years ago and she was an outstanding opera singer even then. She is currently singing the role of Fiordiligi at Covent Garden to rave reviews so it should be a fun weekend of work and catching up.

I have to take Arthur into Kings for further hearing assessments this week and couldn’t resist posting this photo of him following in his parents footsteps – just listening to an edit perhaps? More »

Up in the air

8 Commentsby Juliette  |  02.03.10  |  "First Night"

We went to see Up in the Air at the cinema yesterday. I really enjoyed it and it was great to have a night out. Personally I am not a popcorn girl at the the pictures, for me its Revels every time. The  highs and lows you experience whilst eating a packet of Revels in the dark can be matched by few films.

Oh joy of joys to find yourself chewing on a malteser but what misery to bite into a wrist-slitting raisin/coffee cream. I still can’t tell the difference between a coffee cream and an orange cream without taking a bite. Hence James’ annoyance at repeatedly getting half eaten sweets.

Tomorrow we have Julian Ovenden in the studio. He is the only actor dubbing himself for the film, Bet on Love as he initially trained as an operatic tenor. More »
